Public Seminar Series:

About Charting the Course:

By now, you've heard the news - significant change is upon all American businesses with potential amendments to the National Labor Relations Act via the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).  Everything from how unions get in, to what happens after they do, is on the table.  Your organization must also change, or risk getting swallowed up in the union "card check" machine.

Techniques taught in this two-day workshop will help organizations protect their union-free status today and long after EFCA becomes a reality.   Even if EFCA does not pass, the legislation has demonstrated big labor's relentless pursuit of the easiest, quickest way into your house with as much legislative support as possible.  Union membership is on the rise thanks to organizing strategies such as corporate campaigns and neutrality/card check agreements.  In 2006, 90% of the new members UNITE HERE organized never even cast a ballot. In August 2005, the AFL-CIO organizing director told The Wall Street Journal that the previous year at least three times as many workers were unionized through “card check” than through NLRB supervised secret ballot elections.

EFCA or no EFCA, the way unions get into your house have changed and old school techniques taught to front line supervisors on unionization and organizing are irrelevant and focus on the wrong subject matter.  What is relevant is how your supervisors can be trained to prevent and identify a union organizing or card-check situation.

Charting the Course: Understanding Labor Law, Labor Relations & Pro-Employee Supervisory Strategies in a Post EFCA World is a comprehensive two day workshop designed for middle and upper operations management, human resource leaders, and in-house labor counsel who are or who may face a union organization attempt and who want to strengthen their organization’s ability to effectively respond.

Built into the Charting the Course workshop is a front-line supervisory level program called Pro-employee Management Relations or Be a Pro!tm . Be a Pro!tm is included for evaluation purposes so that workshop attendees can take techniques learned, or the actual course, back in-house. (see The Certificate in Labor Relations.) Successful integration of Be a Pro!tm will improve employee morale, reduce workplace conflict and strengthen employee management relations thereby reducing or eliminating the need for employees to turn to 3rd parties for a resolution to workplace dissatisfaction.

Participants of Charting the Course will:

  • Learn methods and hear case studies for best practices on how to prepare for legislative changes on a corporate level.
  • Receive tools to train front-line supervisors  on preventing and identifying union organizing or card check situations and techniques on how to effectively engage employees on union-related issues.
  • Evaluate Pro-employee Management Relations (or Be a Pro!tm), a LLG course designed for use with front-line supervisors.
  • Be able to make sense of current events in labor relations; changing NLRB case law and what it means for your organization.
  • Learn new strategies to create or maintain a union-free organization.
  • Discover practical “how-to” skills and interactive practice sessions using leading management strategies to enhance leader’s ability to handle union issues, union provocations, and employee concerns effectively and confidently.
